Bianca Brand
Bianca Brand
Bianca Brand was born and grew up in Pretoria, South Africa. She currently lives on the outskirts of the city in the natural surroundings of the Rietvlei wetlands, from which she draws daily creative inspiration for her work.
Bianca completed her BA in Visual Communication Design in 2013 at The Open Window School of Visual Communication where she honed her design skills and developed her digital craft which she applies to other mediums such as textiles, screen-printing, murals, etchings and monoprints. She depicts scenes with patterns and movements which at first appear uncanny but combine to form a visceral and shimmering quality in her work. Her weird style is sometimes reflected by strange figures in scenes of nature that might as well take place at an intergalactic dance party and at other times it could be a neo-rock painting. For Bianca it is about excavating her thoughts and stirring an affect in the experience of the viewer, an effect created by what appear to be buzzing plants found all over her surreal scenes.
Some of her achievements in the art world include being selected for the Top 100 Sasol New Signatures in 2015. In the same year her artworks were used by Pieter Burger for SA Fashion week. In 2016 she was commissioned for a mural at African Beer Emporium. She has exhibited in various group shows at Turbine Art Fair (2016, 2019, 2020) and was selected to exhibit at Woordfees in 2017. In 2019 she collaborated with Bevan de Wet Artist & Printmaker on a series of 2 etchings and 16 monoprints.
Bianca has been making home on a plot, carefully documenting and doodeling about her experiences in closer proximity with the cycles of nature.
